The Art of Expression

Dash Fine Arts is proud to present "The Art of Expression," a dynamic exhibition celebrating the rich diversity of artistic voices across a broad spectrum of media, periods, and cultural backgrounds. This show is a testament to the power of art as a vehicle for individual expression, bringing together a collection of artists who reflect the breadth and depth of human experience.

"The Art of Expression" seeks to showcase a selection of works from eleven unique artists, each with their distinct vision, style, and message. The artists featured represent diversity not only in terms of gender, race, and culture, but also in their use of different mediums—painting, sculpture, glass, mixed media, and more. By offering this eclectic mix of artistic perspectives, the exhibition creates a dialogue between the works, inviting viewers to explore the multifaceted nature of human creativity and expression.

Serving as a powerful reminder that art knows no boundaries and is a reflection of the multifaceted nature of our world, this exhibition offers the community an opportunity to engage with a rich variety of artistic perspectives, each representing a unique voice while contributing to a broader collective narrative.

Artists Featured:

Felix Berroa – Known for his vibrant depictions of Dominican life and culture, Berroa's works bring forward a celebration of heritage and tradition through bold colors and evocative figures.

Alvin Hollingsworth – A key figure in Harlem’s artistic community, Hollingsworth’s art addresses themes of civil rights and social justice, presenting powerful narratives that resonate with contemporary struggles.

Albino Mattioli – Hailing from Italy, Mattioli’s abstract expressionist paintings offer viewers a journey through form, color, and texture, evoking emotion and interpretation through non-representational forms.

Dimitris Pavlopoulos – Born in Greece and working in Spain, Pavlopoulos uses mixed media to explore the boundaries between the physical and the metaphysical, with works that question the nature of existence and the self.

Paul Van Ginkel – A Western and Native American painter, Van Ginkel’s art captures the rugged beauty and spirit of the American West, blending traditional styles with a modern flair.

Greg Blair – Blair creates large scaled mixed media works utilizing a primary color palette and diverse mediums for contrast. His works include coarse brushstrokes and drips utilized in the “action” painting style. Blair will often incorporate musical artists and pop culture icons into his works.

Joyce Lieberman – A contemporary painter, Lieberman’s work reflects an intimate exploration of personal and collective identity, often using bright colors and abstract forms to convey complex human experiences.

Danny Robinette – Born in North Carolina's western Piedmont, Robinette was primarily a self-taught artist. He reveled and excelled at depicting North Carolina landscapes with a quiet intensity of light and color. The flat surfaces skillfully painted invite the viewer into the artist's world, one with evidence of human experience but lacking a depiction of any sentient beings.

Rob Stern – Working with glass, Stern’s dynamic, large-scale installations explore the intersection between art, science, and nature, often taking inspiration from the natural world.

Jason Skeldon – A street artist with a contemporary edge, Skeldon’s works blend pop culture references with social commentary, challenging viewers to reconsider their everyday environments.

Reed Benson – Known for his fluorescent abstract and Neo-Expressionism paintings, Benson adeptly intertwines his deep interest in quantum mechanics and music, as well as his experience with synesthesia, a sensory condition causing him to see music and hear color, in his work.

"This Is Us"
Reed Benson Solo Exhibition
March 10, 2023 – April 30, 2023
Atlanta, Ga

Reed Benson's "This Is Us," features 12 works influenced by Austrian neurologist Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory suggesting the psyche comprises of three concepts of the mind that interact and contribute to the ways in which individuals think and behave.

"The creative undertaking of this series hurt and was painful. But when I considered my audience, where a piece could go, and how someone would place it on their wall, it helped form my process and intent. Starting from somewhere, rather than 30,000 miles into space, like how some of my works are, certainly took me to a different place. These works have grown and grown, and have taken on deeper meaning. When I contemplated different themes, a lot of these works were created based on the feelings from events that we have gone through, or events that we are going through right now and are happening at the same time. For people to truly understand these works, all they have to do is open their eyes and look around themselves and the world. When I say 'this is us,' it really is us."

—Reed Benson

Analyzing Freud's model, Benson's subjects characterize the id's set of uncoordinated instinctual desires including demanding behavior, sexual deviance, and unreasonable nature.

Responsible for mediating between the id and superego, Benson incorporates Freud's pleasure seeking ego, welcoming ambiguity on whether the idea that no moral right or wrong exists in the themes and topics he explores.

Viewing the self as an imaginary idea of how and who it ought to be through "the way that we look at each other," Benson's take on superego restrains the desires of the id through a moral perspective and the self-awareness of one's guilt. "This Is Us," disregards the rules of society, what is forbidden, and what is allowed, advocating for conscientious rather than practical means.

Fascinated by structure, Benson incorporates eccentric graphic portraits, vivid colors, and an innovative approach to the movement of shapes, figures, and textures through his use of brushes, stencils, acrylics, and spray paints.

"This Is Us" intertwines past and current events while exploring modern-day global, social, and economic issues. From the Russian invasion of Ukraine to the lasting effects on society from the pandemic, there is something for everyone to relate to.
